The "John" quilts were commissioned in November, '09 as memorials to John, a soon-to-pass ALS victim. They were requested by his younger brother for his mother, his sister-in-law(John's widow) and his niece and nephew(John's children, ages 6 & 13) so that they would always be able to have an actual piece of John with them as they recovered from their loss and for the remainder of their lives. John passed in January, '10. His brother felt that these quilts would bring emotional comfort just as the Prayer Quilt had that John received when he entered Hospice had. The quilts are scheduled to be presented at his interment service in the Spring.
Memory quilts are meant to be used in the present, but preserve the past for generations to come. They bring comfort to those who have lost (or are about to lose) a loved one, but Memory Quilts are not limited to the deceased. Mothers commission them from their children's clothes, wives from their husbands clothes and parents from thier clothes to pass onto their children. I have made quilts from old flannel shirts, dress shirts and neckties. Also, from wedding dresses, baby clothes, sports memorabilia, aprons, handkerchiefs, sundresses. The option are endless.
I have chosen to feature the John Quilts here because they are, perhaps, the most touching of all the quilts I have created. I'd love to preserve your memories for you.
If you like what you see, and you still have questions, please email me. Please put "memory quilt" in the subject line.
Thanks for your interest.
