Julianna's Quilt was commissioned for Julianna Smoot and presented to her in early 2011 while she was still the White House Social Secretary to Barack Obama. She has since gone on to fill an important lead role in his 2012 bid for re-election.
Her quilt was constructed from apparel submitted by her mother, many of which were items that she herself constructed during her daughter's youth.
Among them was a prom dress, a graduation gown, several theatrical costumes and an Easter skirt. Ginghams, calicos, laces, eyelets and satins were just some of the many different materials that were incorporated into her finished quilt.
Her favorite colors of blue and a touch of orange were used to balance and compliment the wide range of colors. A playful blue dotted backing highlights the overall project.
A traditional style was chosen, but no pattern was used. Each block is unique and assymetrical. It was quilted in an all over design that remotely resembled a brain and so, because of the coral colorations within, Julianna's Quilt was nicknamed "Brain Coral"
Julianna Smoot is an amazing young, bright, intelligent woman and "Brain Coral" is a perfect nickname for her quilt.
